Interactive Art Research Exercise

In this piece “Fan Mirror” by Daniel Rozin, he utilizes hand held fans as his main subject. The intention of “Fan Mirror” is to have these fans mimic and rely on the motions made by the user. For example, if the interactor moves from right to left the fans will also move in that same way of movement as well as at the same speed of the user. The piece incorporates the behavior of the user because they are in control of what the interactive work decides to do and how they interpret it. Another interactive piece is “Particles” by artist Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi. In the work an installation is illuminated through the use of lights that seem as though they are floating throughout the room. The installation, which is constructed to make it seem as if the lights were randomly placed, but they rely on the involvement of the user. The piece operates as a person comes within the space and is immersed into their surroundings of lights. These pieces relates to David Rokeby’s “Transforming Mirrors, Subjectivity and Control” in many ways. Rokeby says that the interaction between the work and the user is important. Interactive pieces allow a unique relationship to occur between each party. When a piece is able to be navigable by the user it makes them feel as though they are a part of the realm the art derives from. Specifically in “Particles” the interactor is able to become a part of this light oriented virtual reality that seems as though it is in another world.
