New club introduces girls to the world of coding

It is a widely recognized issue that the amount of women in the fields of math and science are significantly lower than that of men. I believe it has less to do with current blatant gender discrimination and more to do with how these fields are interrogated in the lives of women somewhat due to the remnants of traditional gender roles. Science and math careers are not glorified like other careers and aren’t targeted towards women at younger ages as something to be interested in. While clearly there is money to be made, and a degree of above-average intellect is required it has less to do with women not possessing these abilities but their lack of opportunity to develop them (encouragingly) at younger ages. These afterschool clubs help present those very opportunities.

Interactive Art

Two interactive art pieces I’ve looked at are The ‘Osmosis’ Installation by Arik Levy and The Cinimod Studio Tunnel Boasts Interactive Illumination. The first installation is at the London Design Museum and coordinates visuals with audio. The visuals are determined by each visitor’s interaction with the work. It is delivered in a black room on a black screen creating intricate green line-based geometric crystals first emerging from a diamond shape. The script is likely generative and responses to body movement in the room invoking a range of textural sounds akin to windchimes. The human movement creating these random structures invokes realization of direct impact. The Cinimod Studio Tunnel plays with color and light, but in a different manner. Visitors in the tunnel are monitored by thermal camera control. Body temperature detects the people as they pass through the tunnel changing intensity and position of the lights. This also is dictated by movement. The color, its pattern, and its position is altered by the number of people present. The cameras and lights are fixated at the top of the tunnel, with each person passing highlited by a streak of white light. The colors range form cool blue to pinks, purples, and warm reds. Both of these exhibit Rokeby’s sentiment that such technologies are indicative of the consequences of our actions. Much of the time man and womankind coast through life without fully seeing the realization of their small to large actions on the environment. Such pieces display that even the simplest actions like moving or putting your hands in the air can affect the world around you.

Avena+ Test Bed

Avena+ Test Bed, by Benedikt Groß is an agricultural print on a landscape in large scale. According to him, the experiment applies algorithms to partition and to create an environmentally beneficial structure into a standard biomass/energy production field. These additional areas establish, or improve, the connectivity for fauna and flora between habitats. The goal is to enhance current agricultural practices.
