I think at this point in time we can start to think more about how we interact within virtual worlds, with robots, and communication technologies with others. It’s important to start thinking about what will we benefit from as a group of people and what technological advances should we keep before we become autonomous beings like our robot counterparts.

In the Introduction of Alone Together, Sherry Turkle discusses how technology has integrated it’s way into our every day lives and how we have accepted this transition. I enjoy Turkle’s emphasis on machines and companionship. Radio and television in a lot of ways were just as much as companions to us as the way we envision robots to be in the future. It’s an interesting implication that we are trying to solve our shortcomings as human beings by replacing them with sociable robots who won’t do so. I think this is an important point to emphasis in developing technology, but I have a more positive outlook on it. I think we are constantly trying to shorten the amount of steps it requires to obtain companionship and intimacy. We want our children to be taken care of, but if we can’t do it there is comfort knowing someone, or something, else will. Sherry Turkle emphasizes the importance of human contact and relationships to childhood development and expresses a deep fear of our obsession with robots being taken too far. This is especially portrayed when someone compares her opposition to marrying robots being similar to being against gay marriage. I think we often think of our fear of robots and see them as beings that look like people, but we have the same dependency on our devices just without them having the physical form of humans. I think sociable robots can be utilized to alleviate human responsibility and stress, but we need to use them responsibly and not put them in place of personal growth. Turkles term the “Robotic Moment” encompasses the time period we are in, where we need to determine how ready we are to deal with sociable robots starting to resemble and possibly replace human responsibilities more.

Alone Together by Sherry Turkle was a fascinating read when considering machines and our constant development in technology. Something that struck me while reading this was when Turkle discusses Levy’s book “Love and Sex with Robots.” I agree with Turkle but was astounded that Levy and others think that there could be anything normal about having a sex life or romantic relationship with a robot. There would be nothing normal about it. I am indifferent about robotics and the future of these machines. While many advances have been made and some of them prove to be amazing additions to our inventions in modern day society, such as robotic arms that allow an amputee to move his/her limbs, some versions of robots seem to stretch away from humanity. For example, the creators of robots that ensure healthy relationships if you were to date one just seems utterly absurd. There is no real connection, and it is not a healthy and accurate depiction of an emotional commitment. Just because someone may be scared of a real commitment or skeptical of certain happenings in real relationships, I don’t think it should be an excuse to date a robot for this reason. On the other hand, I agree with Alissa in that the machines in our pockets can prove to be a commitment to us in some ways even though we don’t consider them “human-like.” I think there should be a healthy balance between robotics for positive purposes but be responsible in our dependability on them.
